Persephone with the Pomegranate

Persephone with the Pomegranate : 2008 - $1,200 USD.

In June 2008 a fan of my work (Kayla Paakkonen of Ontario) contacted me about a school project she was doing on me and afterwards sent me a digital copy of the painting she had done as part of her school project (below, top right).

Honoured by her homage and inspired by her choice of Persephone (the Greek Goddess of Fertility, Life and the Underworld) I decided to make my own version of Persephone and chose to do it in the same style as my 2003 painting Violinist #2.

Hardly the first to paint Persephone, the goddess has also been painted by:

  • Christoph Schwartz - Rape of Proserphine - 1570
  • Rembrandt van Rijin - The Abduction of Proserpine - 1631
  • Dante Gabriel Rossetti - Persephone - 1874
  • Lord Frederick Leighton - Return of Persephone - 1891
  • Thomas Hart Benton - Persephone - 1938
  • Thomas Hart Benton - Persephone - 1939
